MJ Paciorek PLASTIC SURGERY Types of Skin Cancer

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Appearance: Small, raised bump with a pearly or translucent surface

Common Areas: Face, neck, ears, hands

Behavior: Typically slow-growing and rarely spreads beyond the skin, but can damage nearby tissue if untreated

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Appearance: Firm, red bump or a crusted sore that doesn’t heal

Common Areas: Sun-exposed areas such as the nose, lips, ears, and forehead

Behavior: Can spread to nearby lymph nodes; early treatment is essential

Melanoma

Appearance: Irregular mole with uneven borders, color changes, or asymmetry

Common Areas: Melanoma can appear anywhere on the body but is most often found on the back, chest, and scalp in men, and on the legs, arms, and back in women. It can also develop on the face, hands, feet, under the nails, or in less sun-exposed areas.

Behavior: The most serious form; can spread rapidly to other parts of the body. Has a high cure rate when caught and treated early

Diagnosis and Treatment

Initial Evaluation

You may notice a lesion yourself or be referred by your primary care provider or dermatologist. We’ll perform a thorough skin examination and discuss your concerns.

Biopsy

If needed, a biopsy will be performed in-office using local anesthesia. This quick procedure allows us to determine the type and depth of the lesion. You may need a few stitches afterward, and results typically arrive within a week.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the cancer.

In-office removal may be appropriate for small basal cell carcinomas and is done under local anesthesia with minimal downtime. Surgical excision may be necessary for larger or more complex cases, often requiring monitored anesthesia and careful closure with a skin flap or graft.

Reconstruction and Wound Care

Our goal is not only to remove the cancer but to restore your skin with precision and care. Dr. Paciorek uses advanced reconstructive techniques to preserve the natural contours and appearance of the treated area. You’ll be supported through every step—from wound care instructions to follow-up healing visits.

After Your Procedure

Healing times vary, but incision lines typically improve over weeks and months, and may take a year or more to fully fade. In some cases, additional procedures may be recommended to fine-tune cosmetic results. Avoiding sun exposure while healing is essential to prevent irregular pigmentation and reduce the risk of future skin cancers.

Ongoing Monitoring and Prevention

Once you’ve had skin cancer, you’re at a higher risk of developing it again—either in the same area or elsewhere.

Follow-up care for basal cell carcinoma is typically recommended every 6 to 12 months. For squamous cell carcinoma, visits are often scheduled every 3 to 6 months for the first few years, then less frequently. We will monitor for any signs of recurrence or new skin changes, and may use imaging for higher-risk cases. If skin cancer returns, your treatment plan will be personalized based on its location, prior treatments, and your overall health.

We’re here to treat the whole person—not just the diagnosis. From the first appointment to full recovery, you’ll receive care that prioritizes your health, your healing, and your peace of mind.

Ideal Candidates

You may be a candidate for skin cancer removal and reconstruction if:

  • You’ve been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or melanoma
  • You’ve noticed a lesion that hasn’t healed or looks suspicious
  • You prefer a treatment plan that emphasizes both medical and aesthetic outcomes
  • You value thorough communication and gentle care during and after treatment

Our team will ensure your treatment is tailored to your specific needs and personal history.
